Re-Outing Cary and Randolph
Two of the movies nominated for tonight’s Academy Awards (Brokeback Mountain, Capote) have homosexual themes – about a gay journalist and author, and gay cowboys.
This past week has seen a flurry of newspaper articles alleging to “re-out” movie stars, and one that even rehashed the friendship between Cary Grant and Randolph Scott.
The reality is most Americans care less and less about sexual orientation.
In 1982, only 32 percent of Americans were willing to accept people who were gay and openly practiced a gay lifestyle – today that number is 51 percent.
For that matter, it's never been clear whether Randolph and Grant were gay, bisexual or straight.
So they shared a Hollywood beachfront home for 12 years?
Scott was also married 43 years to his second wife, Patricia Stillman.
Cary Grant married five times – including to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton – a niece of Marjorie Merriweather Post and cousin to Battle Creek,
Mi, native songbirds Betty and Marion Hutton.
Randolph Scott's cowboy movies are only a blur. But who can forget Cary Grant?
So, he was no saint in life.
We can remember him in North by Northwest, with a real Saint – Eva Marie.
